Records of Equity and Affirmative Action

The records of Equality and Affirmative Action document the efforts by St. Cloud State to make the higher process of employees fair, policies and procedures to report sexual harrassment or other types of harrassment, and to track progress towards regarding the diversity of students and employees.

Series 1: Administration

This series contains records about Affirmative Action, including efforts to combat campus racism, investigation into campus anti-semitism, and efforts to educate campus about affirmative action. It also includes publications from Affirmative Action as well as a selection of past notices of vacancy.

Series 2: Affirmative Action Committee

Dating back to 1977 when the first Affirmative Action officer was appointed, this series documents the Affirmative Action Committee.  The committee was comprised of employees across campus, including staff, administrators, and faculty. Most interesting are the annual reports of the committee that document their activities and meeting minutes.

Series 3: Goals, Plans, and Reports

The heart of the collection, this series contains affirmative action plans for much of the 1990s and early 2000s, as well as annual reports that document the progress towards those plans. Also included in this sesries are procedures for hiring administrators and faculty as well as for reporting complaints of discrimination and harassment/

Series 4: Statistics

This series contains a wide variety of statistics that were tracked by Affirmative Action. Some of these statistics do show up in the annual reports and plans in series 3, while many do not. Tracked here include the ethnicities of employees and students, failed and successful searches, complaints, and the number of bias motivated incidents and hate crimes.

Records of Faculty Wives and Women

This collection contains materials created by the Faculty Wives and Women organization ranging from their establishment in 1947 up until the year 2013.

Materials included are official meeting minutes spanning from 1960-2003, club directories from 1963-2013, treasurer/ budget reports from 1963-1989 and 1995-2008. Included are five scrapbooks containing newspaper clippings, photographs, and club event flyers. In the earliest scrapbook, there are early meeting notes and yearly club summaries along with the clippings from the St. Cloud Times relating to the club. Later editions of scrapbooks contain more photos and even a few obituaries of long-time members. Researchers may find this collection a helpful insight into the lives of women living on and around campus, as well as how faculty wives created ways to connect with the community.

This collection contains annual reports that provide an overview of financial operations of the university for a fiscal year. The first report is from the 1974/75 fiscal year to the 2011/12 fiscal year, though there is a gap here between 1989/90 and the 2000/2001 fiscal years.

The PDF digital files for 2001/02 to 2017/18 were captured from the St. Cloud State University website. There are no physical copies for the 2001/02, 2011/12, 2015/16-2017/18 reports.

According to the Finance and Administration website, "St. Cloud State no longer has a stand alone Annual Financial Report. This reporting is now conducted by Minnesota State."

The papers of John Fischer contain various drafts of two published books. The books are Harold Robbins Presents: High Stakes (1986) and Harold Robbins Presents: Station Break (1987).

The Free Statesman was an alternative independent newspaper published by students of St. Cloud State College, St. John's University, and College of St. Benedict from February 1967 through February 1968 and consisted of 24 editions. The newspaper was created by Leftist students who felt the official student newspapers at their respective schools did not represent their views. Topics include the termination of St. Cloud State professor Ed Richer, the Vietnam War and its protests, campus, local, and national political issues of the day, and area arts, theatre, and culture.

Records of Gamma Sigma Sigma

This collection contains the records of Gamma Sigma Sigma, previously called Sigma Theta Chi, and the Story Teller’s Club. Included are three meeting minute books, two treasurer’s books that document some of the group's finances, and correspondence with Isabel Lawrence who organized the Story Teller’s Club. Also included is the club scrapbook which has photos, programs, and newspaper clippings. There are also records pertaining to the name change from Story Teller's Club, to Sigma Theta Chi, to Gamma Sigma Sigma.

General Oral Histories

These general oral histories were conducted from 1973 to 1993 predominantly in the late 1970s.  25 of the interviews are centered on the three cities of St. Cloud, Waite Park, and Sauk Rapids, while the remaining interviews are from communities north and east of that region.  Three interviews are from communities west of Duluth.

The people interviewed represent a wide spectrum of occupations including business owners in a variety of fields and farmers.  Journalists, teachers, musicians, peace officers, and medical care givers are also interviewed.  Each interviewee shares experiences from the early 1900s to the time of their interview and all discuss the changes to their community that they have seen in that time.  Many discuss how their parents or grandparents migrated to the United States and then to St. Cloud area, as well as giving family experiences in the area.  Experiences during the world wars, both at home and in the services, are provided, particularly economic effects on agriculture and manufacturing.  In some, experiences with the Civilian Conservation Corps during the Great Depression are also referenced.

Brief biographical and interview notes are given for all participants.  Date of birth and death were given when known using the oral histories, St. Cloud Times obituaries, Google search, or Findagrave.com.

Some interviews were actually transcribed. The typewritten transcripts were keyed into a Word document but have not been checked against the audio. Past experiences has suggested that the transcripts may not be complete. In the meantime, the transcripts are available here as PDFs.

Harry Goehring Papers

The collection contains two of Goehring’s field books that date from 1951 to the early 1970s. The first book contains notes regarding his banding efforts over 20 years of brown bats and winter bat banding. The other book documents efforts to band chimney swift birds near campus including the downtown Paramount Theatre. These books include records of banding both species of bats, the bat's sex, and bat's band number. The field books also includes include yearly summaries of bat banding efforts and grand totals. The books also contains correspondence from various institutions in which banded bats or swift bats had been caught, injured, or found deceased.

Henry Harren Papers
S-56 · Collection · 1963-1966

The Harren Papers contain mainly correspondence, government reports and pamphlets, news releases, clippings, minutes of various committees and subcommittees, legislative acts and bills, and special study reports that relate to the Senator’s legislative work. The majority of the items date between 1963 and 1966. The collection consists of three series: legislative subject files, Minnesota Outdoor Recreation Resource Commission (MORRC) subject files, and Miscellaneous Booklets and Pamphlets.

The legislative subject files relate to Harren’s work as a Minnesota state senator. They consist mainly of materials pertaining to the committees and subcommittees on which he served, and to special interests topics from his home district, such as the Home School for Girls in Sauk Centre, Minnesota, and the Stearns County Planning Commission. Other major topics covered are conversation and natural resources, air and water pollution, unemployment, state aid, the State Planning Commission, the State Commission Against Discrimination (SCAD), and the Governor’s Commission on Human Rights, land ownership and exchange, the 1965 Home Remedies Bill, the State Electricity Board, and education in Minnesota.

The Minnesota Outdoor Recreation Resource Commission (MORRC) is a bi-partisan legislative commission designed to give active legislative leadership in guiding the state’s program to preserve and accelerate the development of its natural recreational resources. The MORRC files consist mainly of subject folders concerned with conservation in Minnesota, particularly parks and recreational areas. They include the 1963 legislative act creating MORRC, the 1965 amended version of the act, several folders containing the correspondence of various commission members and consultants, folders dealing with the administrational workings of the commission. There are files relating to major topics, such as state parks, historic sites, water resources, the Boundary Water Canoe Area, Voyageurs’ National Park, and the Board of Outdoor Recreation. The minutes of the commission’s meetings for the years 1963-1966 are also included.

The third series contains miscellaneous booklets and pamphlets from the years of 1954 to 1966. It includes geological surveys, MORRC Reports, air and water pollution materials, Minnesota Agricultural Experiment reports, and other miscellaneous pamphlets and booklets.

Jon Hassler Papers
101 · Collection · 1976-1987

The papers of Jon Hassler contain various drafts of four published books and one unpublished manuscript, as well as drafts for a play based on a published book.  These are Staggerford (1977), Simon's Night (1979) (including a play based on this book), The Love Hunter (1981), The Book of Brendan (unpublished, early 1980s), and A Green Journey (1985).  There is also a small amount of material, including audio and video, concerning events at St. Cloud State University related to Hassler's gift of material to the University Archives.

The papers show the evolution of the writing of the books, demonstrating how Hassler created, crafted, and revised the stories over time.

This material includes St. Cloud State events related to the donation by Jon Hassler (including video and audio), as well as clippings, biographical information, and images. Also included here are uncut galley proofs for Staggerford, Simon's Night, and The Love Hunter.

This series contains three drafts, a copy-edited draft and a small amount of material related to Staggerford.

This series contains mostly three drafts and a copy-edited draft of Simon's Night.

Two drafts are included in this series of a play based on Simon's Night.

Series 4: The Love Hunter (1981)

Included in this series are five drafts, as well as a copy-edited typescript.

Series 5: The Book of Brendan

Never published, the Book of Brendan served as source material for Grand Opening (1987) and North of Hope (1990).  The books follow the childhood of boy Brendan Foster and his family.

This series includes at least two drafts of this unpublished manuscript, including material separated by chapter.

Series 6: A Green Journey (1985)

Included in this are five drafts of this book, as well as the galley proofs.

This collection contains records from the Evelyn Payne Hatcher Museum of Anthropology, totaling 6 boxes. The documents begin with the opening of the museum in 1973, when it was known as the St. Cloud Museum of Man.

The records date from 1972-1997.  The majority of the records pertain to museum artifacts that have been accessioned and deaccessioned.

The collection is arranged into two series, which are as follows:

Series 1: Administrative Records, 1972-1997

This series consists of documents such as correspondence and memorandum, minutes and agendas, articles of incorporation and by-laws, etc.  The subject matter of the materials focuses on the day to day operations of the museum.   There are also pamphlets and photographs for exhibits that the museum hosted, many of which were devoted to Native American culture.

Series 2: Accession and Deaccession Catalogs, 1970s-1990s

This series consists of the accession and deaccession sheets that were kept by the museum for inventory of artifacts.  The records include the date the museum acquired the items, the condition of said items, and oftentimes photographs to identify them.  If an artifact was taken out of the collection, this information was also noted and listed as a deaccession.

The papers contain two scrapbooks with photos, newspaper clippings, pamphlets, ticket stubs, programs, and memorabilia in regards to the her social life at St. Cloud Teachers College from 1953 to 1957. Materials document a variety of a topics, including freshman orientation camp at Lake Kronos, elected student officials, student dances, celebrity visits (Duke Ellington dance), Henrikson’s class schedule, honor student certificates, letters from home, Al Sirat social fraternity gatherings and events, Minerva Society socials and events, Associated Women Student (AWS) events and members, Religion in Life Week (RIL) committee members, theater, and Choral Club performances.

The Heuer Papers consist of constituent correspondence from 1957 to 1966 while serving as a Minnesota state senator. Also included here are correspondence and meeting minutes from the Todd County Committee for the Minesota Statehood Centennial, in which he served as chair.

The papers of Michael Thomas Hinkemeyer contain various drafts of many published books, as well as papers of unpublished novels and other ideas.  The collection also includes books that he wrote using pseudonyms Vanessa Royall and Jan Lara. This series contains a small amount of material related to Hinkemeyer’s life as well as records related to the donation and events surrounding his gift of papers to St. Cloud State University including audio and video.

Series 2: Published and Unpublished Works

The series contains drafts of many of Hinkemeyer’s published books, as well as other books that have not been published.  The unpublished books include Monahan: An American Tragedy, A Web of Time, Slow Death, and The Coming. A few books have more than one draft. These include original typescripts, handwritten revisions and other corrections.

Also in this series are uncut galley proofs for The Creator (1979) and The Harbinger (1980).

This collection contains records from the Department of History at St. Cloud State University. Items in this collection date from 1957 to 2014, the majority of which are from the late 1960s to late 1980s. The collection contains various administrative records and department minutes and memorandum.

These records are arranged in two series:

Series 1: Administrative Records

This series contains a variety of administrative records. Information relating to courses, curriculum, budgets, enrollments, graduate programs, semester conversion, and program review are found here. This series also contains records for Phi Apha Theta, History club, the now former Central Minnesota Historical Center, department newsletters, the NDEA Institute for Advanced Study, and the Northern Great Plains History Conference. Additionally, there are records pertaining to the general St. Cloud State oral history project and the writing of A Centennial History of St. Cloud State College.

Series 2: Minutes and Memorandum

This series contains records of history faculty department meeting minutes and department memorandum from 1957 to 1999.

The records in this collection are arranged into ten series, which are as follows:

Series 1: Correspondence, 1971-1990

This series has correspondence and interoffice memorandums from the Center of Information Media.

Series 2: Curriculum, 1957-1990

By far the largest series out of the group, the Curriculum series contains information on the different programs that the Center for Information Media has offered in the past, from certification and licensure courses to graduate programs.  This series includes course schedules, syllabi, and information on enrollment.

Series 3: Finances, 1965-1981

This series includes information on CIM’s budget, grants, and the Luther Brown Scholarship Program.

Series 4: Minutes, 1964-2006

Faculty meeting minutes make up the bulk of this series.

Series 5: Multimedia, 1965-1977

The Center for Information Media created multi-media for some of its earlier events, including a reel-to-reel from a conference in 1965 to an audio cassette recording of Luther Brown’s retirement party in 1977.

Series 6: Photographs, 1972-1973

This series includes black and white photo albums of CIM graduates and graduation ceremonies from the early 1970s.

Series 7: Publications, 1962-2008

The Center for Information Media publishes its own newsletter which can be found in this series.  Newsletters dating from 2002-2008 can also be viewed on the Center’s website: http://www.stcloudstate.edu/cim/news.asp.

Series 9: Staffing, 1965-2000

Included in this series are memorandums regarding job descriptions and information on staffing.

Series 10: University of North Dakota Joint Program, 1968-1982

For a brief period, St. Cloud State University had a joint library/audio-visual program with the University of North Dakota.

Records of Institutional Effectiveness

This collection contains records of Institutional Effectiveness. Founded in the late 1930s, the main task of this office was to "organize and conduct research studies to provide information and data, serving as a basis for University decision making..." The bulk of the records here serve that purpose, gathering and presenting information about St. Cloud State students, faculty, curriculum, and facilities.

Series 1: Administrative Records

This series contains annual reports, history of Institutional Effectiveness, and faculty rosters.  The faculty rosters are significant as they list biographical information about St. Cloud State faculty, including salary.  There are additional faculty rosters in Series 2 on microfiche.

Series 2: Reports

This series has a wide variety of reports, nearly all related to St. Cloud State.  Many of the reports are related to students, including enrollment, ACT profiles of incoming freshmen, grade distribution, and faculty-student ratios.  Other reports are arranged by topic and are listed individually to facilitate access.

Other significant records include those that give a snapshot of St. Cloud State University. This includes the Higher Education General Information Survey (HEGIS), 1966-1980, to the federal government's Department of Education. HEGIS reported on student enrollment, campus facilities devoted to instruction, finances of the university, and degrees awarded. The summary of academic data, dating from 1982 to 2003, compiled information at the department, college and university level about students and student enrollment, including year, gender and major, faculty and staff, credits generated, and class size.

Microfiche is included in this series, likely reports run from the office's database. By academic term, these records report on student enrollment, faculty, instructional load, courses offered and their history, ethnic and racial background of students, students martial status, and transfers to St. Cloud State.

University Archives does have digital records taken from this office's website but are not included in this finding aid.

Records of International Studies

This collection contains records from the Center for International Studies at St. Cloud State University. Items in this collection date from 1968 to 2014, the majority of which are from the mid-1970s to the late-1980s. Mostly correspondence related to international study, this collection also includes budget ledgers, program publications, newsletters, program yearbooks, and student handbooks.

This records are arranged in three series.

Series 1: Areas of Study

These records are separated by the various locations students studied abroad. Information related to program planning, such as program financing and budgeting, staffing, coursework and student and faculty accommodations can be found here. There is also information on program promotion and assessment. The majority of these files are on the Denmark and England programs.

Series 2: Administrative Records

These records are made up of department correspondence, reports, budgets, newsletters, and publications that contain information related to maintaining and expanding of International Studies. Special attention is given to the promotion of the unit and its study abroad programs. These records also include a few specific programs not associated with a particular location such as Academic Travel Abroad, Common Market Program, Exchange Program Agreements, Foreign Student and Foreign Student Advisor records, and the Fine Arts in Europe program. Information on these programs includes program descriptions, planning, and evaluations.

Series 3: Committees

These records are produced by committees created to review and advise the International Studies program that date mostly in the 1980s and early 1990s.

Contained in this collection are 832 William Henry Jackson chromolithographs. Total number of images, including duplicates, are 1243. The images are organized by serial number, including those that are duplicates. If an image has duplicates, the number of additional copies are noted after the caption in the finding aid.

The description of each image is the caption as printed on the chromolithograph. Copyright of these images, as stamped on the chromolithograph are all dated few years before and after 1900. Images depicted on the chromolithographs are from Europe, especially Germany, Austria, and Great Britain, and North America. Subjects shown include prominent buildings or groups of buildings, views of cities, country sides, and mountains, such as Yellowstone, cliff dwellings in Colorado, Washington, D.C., and Niagara Falls.

The Library of Congress has many of these chromolithographs already scanned and available in different file formats, including as TIF files. Those already scanned by the Library of Congress were not scanned again; instead, a link is provided for under each image that is available through the Library of Congress. Those that were not available through the Library of Congress have been scanned and are available through the Repository @ St. Cloud State.

This collection contains literary and artistic publications that have been put together by students, faculty, and staff at St. Cloud State University.  The items in this collection date from 1990 to 2006.  Additions to this collection may be ongoing.

The magazine is funded through an SCSU Cultural Diversity Committee allocation and is sponsored through St. Cloud State’s writing center, the Write Place.  The contributors to the magazine retain all rights to their work(s).  Kaleodiscope is published once a year.

This collection consists of constituent correspondences and subject correspondences of various topics. The subject correspondences cover a wide range of political topics in which Clawson showed interest in during his time in office. Within the subject correspondences are a wide range of miscellaneous material such as press releases, meeting minutes, campaign materials, newsletters, invitations, newspaper clippings, speeches, memos, reports, and weekly schedules. This collection consists of 12 boxes and one oversize folder that contain the records of St. Cloud State University's radio station, KVSC-FM. The vast majority of the records relate to programming, trivia contests, and station management. The records are from 1965-2015. Additions to this collection may be ongoing.

The records are arranged in four series, which are as follows:

Series 1: Administrative Records, 1965-1990

This series contains records pertaining to budgets, station management, and publications, as well as major changes in the organizational structure, physical space, and radio engineering. The records are organized alphabetically first and then by date. Budget information includes requests, equipment purchases and alottments. This series also includes: FCC license applications, license renewals, construction applications, correspondence, records that relate to the station's power increase and switch from 88.5 to 88.1, equipment and space construction, listener surveys, and the proposal to hire a full time staff person. Publications include brochures and newsletters, as well as issues of Reverb, a music magazine published by KVSC from 1986 to 1990.

Series 2: Radio and Television Guild, 1971-1986

This series consists of meeting minutes and constitution revisions for the Radio and Television Guild, the student organization that managed the station for a time from KVSC's first day through its early years. Subjects covered in the minutes include: guild budgets, trivia contest discussions, other promotional activities, staffing, and programming decisions.

Series 3: Programming, 1967-1988

This series contains program guides and program logs from KVSC's first day on the air in May 1967 through 1971. There are some logs after 1971 here. These records provide detailed information about the type of programs broadcast by KVSC and when they aired.

Series 4: Trivia, 1980-2015

This series contains information about KVSC's annual trivia contest weekend, which began in 1980. The records include trivia answer books, t-shirts, and posters.

Isabel Lawrence Papers
196 · Collection · 1879-1936

This collection contains records and items related to Isabel Lawrence, faculty member and first female president of St. Cloud State University, acting or permanent. Items in this collection date from approximately 1879 to 1950, the majority of which were created between 1890 and 1920. The first two series contain documents that belonged to Lawrence and were kept by former faculty member and friend of Lawrence, Albertina C. Anderson. The papers contain drafts of articles and addresses by Lawrence, some of her personal notes on several topics including developmental psychology and literature, and writings by students and other faculty members that may have come into her possession. The third series contains articles of clothing that belonged to Lawrence and were kept by Mrs. Blanche Anderson.

These records are arranged in four series:

Series 1: Records Created by Isabel Lawrence

This series contains a variety of typed and handwritten records. Much of it is drafts of essays, articles, and addresses by Lawrence discussing child and adolescent development and teaching methods, including a handwritten draft of a commencement address. Other records include personal notes on developmental psychology, literature, teaching methods, and lesson plans.

Series 2: Records Created by Other Writers

This series contains records that were not created by Lawrence but likely came into her possession and were found in the same donation. Records include, but are not limited to, writings by 1897 graduates Benhof E. Benhardus and Vernon E. McCombs, criticisms by faculty of practice teachers in St. Cloud State's model school, and records from other normal schools and teachers colleges in New York and Chicago.

Series 3: Clothing Belonging to Isabel Lawrence

This series contains clothing belonging to Isabel Lawrence that had been kept by Mrs. Blanche Anderson and were transferred to the University Archives by Mrs. Alice Wick, wife of former SCSU president Robert Wick. Included here are two dresses, a mesh top-coat, a fur handwarmer, five pieces of lace, and a 1987 letter from then University Archivist Marie Elsen to Blanche Anderson.

Series 4: Tribute and Other Material

This series contains mostly material related to Lawrence's retirement from St. Cloud State in May 1921. Letters were solicited from alumni and most letters received were bound into two volumes.  Other letters were left loose.  The bound letters are organized by graduating class and give tribute to Lawrence.  The letters congratulate Lawrence upon her retirement, share memories of her when the alum had attended St. Cloud State, and updates on their own lives.  There is a folder with Lawrence's 1936 obituary and other tribute material related to her death.

Legislators and Politics Oral Histories

These oral histories were predominantly done in the 1970s with half conducted in 1973. Some date from the 1980s and early 1990s.  The majority of the interviews are with state legislators and the remaining are with mayors, city councilmen, campaign managers, party managers, widows of politicians, and US Congressmen.  All of the participants were men except three (who were widows) and represented Central Minnesota communities ranging from Sandstone to Brainerd to those locations just north of the Twin Cities.

With some variance, all participants were asked similar questions including personal and family history in Minnesota, early political interests and activities, committee assignments, sponsored bills, the campaign and election process, the legislative process, and their future plans in politics.  Unique questions were asked of individuals as the interview unfolded.  Certain political issues that were significant in the early 1970s are common topics including new party designation requirements, lengths of terms, legislator salaries, and the impact of Nixon’s landslide victory in 1972 on local elections.  The Watergate scandal is also discussed in several interviews.

Since the legislators’ service collectively goes back to 1935, the changes in the atmosphere, organization, and membership of the legislature are discussed in several oral histories.  Many of the interviews reference other participants in this oral history collection. For many, the interview often took place at the beginning or middle of their political careers.

Brief biographical sketches and interview notes are given for all participants.  Type of office, terms of service, and constituency represented are also listed.  Transcripts of interviews are available unless otherwise noted below.

Some interviews were actually transcribed. The typewritten transcripts were keyed into a Word document but have not been checked against the audio. Past experiences has suggested that the transcripts may not be complete. In the meantime, the transcripts are available here as PDFs.

This collection contains photocopies of articles, poetry, and other writings other than books by author Sinclair Lewis. The material was gathered by St. Cloud State University librarian Dwight Burlingame in the early 1970s.

In 1933, Lewis collaborated with Lloyd Lewis to write a play revolving around the Civil War called The Jayhawker. Lloyd Lewis was a noted Civil War historian, writing biographies of General William Tecumseh Sherman and Ulysses S. Grant. In the fall of 1934, the play, which in early drafts collected by Hubert Gibson was called “The Skedaddler” and “The Glory Hole,” was performed in Philadelphia, Washington, and New York.

The Hubert Irey Collection of Sinclair Lewis consists of many drafts of the Sinclair Lewis and Lloyd Lewis collaboration The Jayhawker, as well as correspondence and news clippings, almost all dated in 1933. Most notable are the drafts of The Jayhawker, showing the evolution of the play from an idea to a finished script.

There is a small but significant collection of material from Hubert Gibson himself, including letters, photographs, and news clippings, dating from the 1930s to the 1990s. Highlights of the material include Gibson’s remarks about his time working on The Jayhawker, as well as his letter of recommendation from Sinclair Lewis.

Series 1: The Jayhawker

Subseries 1: Drafts

Arranged in chronological order, the drafts tell the story about how The Jayhawker evolved from an idea to a play. Most of the material is typewritten with varying degrees of handwritten revisions in pencil or ink. These revisions were in English and in shorthand, either written by Sinclair or Lloyd Lewis, as well as Hubert Gibson.

Especially significant is the final draft of The Jayhawker, then titled “The Glory Hole,” hand inscribed to Hubert:

“For Gib, Who not only typed this, but acted all the parts during his obstetrical ministrations to us in our confinement. Lloyd Lewis Sept. 29, 1933 Sinclair Lewis”

Subseries 2: Miscellaneous

Included here are correspondence, news clippings, and artifacts. Most significant are the letters between Sinclair and Lloyd Lewis, April 1933 to September 1933. Written mostly to Sinclair, Lloyd Lewis discussed the details of the plot of the play, which he was calling “The Skedaddler.” Other details include possible producers of the play, as well as arrangements for a room at Chicago’s Sherry Hotel.

Also included in this subseries is an empty box of paper, paper which was used to write the drafts of The Jayhawker.

Series 2: Hubert Irey Gibson

Correspondence, photographs, and news clippings are included here. Most significant are the letters between Gibson and his daughter, Barbara. These letters, as well as a 1960 news clipping, provides insight into Gibson’s experience as Lewis’ temporary secretary.

Also included in this subseries is a color photocopy of a 1935 letter of recommendation written by Sinclair Lewis for Hubert Gibson.

The field studies, theses, creative works, and starred papers are completed to fulfill the requirements to receive a master's degree.

After the state of Minnesota passed law in April 1953 to allow for "fifth year" courses or graduate classes at state colleges, St. Cloud State first offered graduate work in the summer of 1953. The first master's degrees were awarded in May 1954.

The records are organized in three series.

Series 1: Publications

This series contains manuals for the preparation of St. Cloud State field studies, theses, creative works and starred papers,  as well as abstracts of field studies, theses, creative works, and starred papers.  The abstracts are especially helpful as they give a short summary of work itself.

Series 2: Microfilm

This series contains microfilm of St. Cloud State field studies, theses, creative works and starred papers. Though not sure of the date range, it is believed that it goes back to the late 1950s.  This series also contains a nearly complete index to the microfilm. Microfilm copies are no longer created.

Series 3: Microfiche

This series contains microfiche of St. Cloud State field studies, theses, creative works and starred papers. Though not sure of the date range, it is believed that it goes back at least 1957.

There are bound copies of all St. Cloud State field studies, theses, creative works and starred papers, in the theses section of Miller Center.  In addition, these works are cataloged individually in the online catalog.

The copies of the St. Cloud State field studies, theses, creative works and starred papers are meant as a back up to the bound copies in the theses section of Miller Center.  The copies in this collection are only consulted when the paper copy is lost or stolen.

As of November 2015, the master theses were not printed and put on the library shelves with a microfiche copy given to University Archives. All master theses are now published on St. Cloud State's institutional repository at http://repository.stcloudstate.edu/.

The abstracts are also available alongside the theses in the theses section of Miller Center.

Maybelle McAllister Papers

The collection contains a book of letters addressed to Maybelle from her fellow dorm mates, desk mates, and teachers during her last year on campus. These letters wished her well, spoke of her character, and the hope of future correspondence. The photo album is a collection of photographs taken by Maybelle during her time in the St. Cloud State Camera Kraft student club. Photos show buildings on campus and the surrounding area, inlcuding some still standing today (such as Shoemaker and Lawrence Halls and Whitney House), as well as classmates, children, and the scenery around campus.

James McKelvy and Family Papers

The papers consist of correspondence, military accounts (returns on personnel and equipment kept by both McKelvy’s), certificates of appointments, newspaper clippings, reminiscence, and miscellaneous items, all arranged chronologically.

The undated papers have information on the Democratic ticket for Congress and other offices; James M. McKelvy’s membership in the Masonic Order-North Star Lodge No. 23, St. Cloud; his membership in the Ancient Order of Prevaricators; railroad passes; instructions to officers in the United States Army from the Treasury Department re: settling their property accounts; the Seventh Minnesota Regiment; Stearns County citizens (a list) who have undertaken to support the constitution, obey the commands of the President, and those of their superior officers in the United States Army; reminiscences of James E. McKelvy and other data concerning his service in the Spanish-American War, as a member of the Thirteenth Minnesota Regiment; and the closing exercises of Shattuck School.

The papers for the 1857-1861 period include an indenture between Henry Swisshelm, St. Cloud, and Thomas A. Fernley, Philadelphia; assignment of property; appointments of James M. McKelvy as notary public; and a certificate of his election as Stearns County Attorney.

Those for 1862-1865 deal largely with McKelvy’s service in the Civil War. There are forms filled out by men enlisting in the Seventh Regiment at St. Cloud, containing vital statistics and physical descriptions’ authorizations by parents for the enlistment of minors; a list of men of the Seventh owing sums to B.C. Spencer, settler at Fort Ripley; records on the Seventh kept by McKelvy; a circular from the Chief of Ordnance, War Department, regarding regulations on resignations of officers in the volunteer service; McKelvy’s appointment as notary public; a certificate admitting McKelvy to North Star Lodge No. 23 (Masons); a certificate attesting to the marriage of McKelvy and Margaret Garlington; and a license to carry on the business of claim and real estate agent.

The papers from 1866 to 1883 relate largely to McKelvy’s professional and business activities and to his family. They include articles of co-partnership between John H. Raymond and John H. Owen, doing business as Raymond and Owen in St. Cloud, and William Dickinson of St. Cloud, forming the firm J.H. Owen and Company to manufacture sashes, door and blinds (McKelvy witnessed the signing of the instrument); appointment of McKelvy as an agent for the Phoenix Insurance Company, Hartford, Connecticut; appointment of McKelvy as a judge in the Seventh Judicial District; a power of attorney granted to McKelvy by Moses R. Brown and Abby A. Brown of Fall River, Massachusetts; letters and other papers regarding McKelvy’s application for a pension for the government because of a wound received at Nashville; letter written by James Lawrence and Edwin Garlington from Helena City, Mountain Home, and Centerville, Montana (These communications have data on gold prospecting, livestock farming, and the formation of the Star of the West Grange—according to James Garlington, the first to be organized in Montana); family news; a statement by Stephen Miller of Windom that the Henry Swisshelm mortgage assigned to Miller by Gile J. Wilson has been paid; articles of incorporation of the Bank of St. Cloud (McKelvy is one of the incorporators; receipts for a contribution made by McKelvy to the Concordia Singing Society in St. Cloud for the construction of a public hall; the will of James McKelvy of Wilkins, Pennsylvania, the father of James M. McKelvy; a ruling by McKelvy as judge on the petition of the St. Paul, Minneapolis and Manitoba Railway Company for a right of way in building a branch from a point near Carlisle, Minnesota, to Pelican Rapids.

Most of the papers dating form 1884 to 1892 deal with the estate of McKelvy, who died in 1884. There are in addition a certificate issued by the Commercial School, St. Cloud, to J.G. McKelvy; the marksmanship record of James E. McKelvy; and a furlough granted by James M. McKelvy, who enlisted in Troop L, First Regiment of Cavalry, at Fort Maginnis, Montana Territory, in 1888.

The file for the rest of the period (1893-1963) is slight and miscellaneous. The most substantial unit is for the years 1898-1899, when James E. McKelvy was serving as captain in the Thirteenth Minnesota Regiment. The papers are made up of his military accounts, for the most part. Other papers for the 1893-1963 period include a list of members of a local board at St. Cloud of the United States Savings and Loan Company, St. Paul; J.G. McKelvy’s certificate of stock ownership in the company; a clipping from the St. Cloud Daily Journal-Press (January 2, 1894) containing an address by Judge D.B. Searle of the Stearns County bench and bar, paying tribute to Judge James M. McKelvy, among others; a certificates regarding James E. McKelvy’s nomination for the position of sheriff of Stearns County; forms concerning James M. McKelvy’s pension; a letter describing Eva McKelvy’s work in the City and County Hospital, St. Paul (Dr. Arthur B. Ancker is the superintendent); additional documents on the McKelvy estate; letters from “Pim” Wilbur written to his mother from Shattuck School in Faribault, Minnesota; letters by Percy Baily, secretary of the Pathfinder, concerning his marriage to Margaret May McKelvy (data on the Pathfinder is also included in these letters); a letter from Jesse McKelvy to his mother regarding the Charleston, West Virginia strike of the coal miners there, small pox in Pittsburgh, and labor importations from the “old country”; letters, newspaper clippings, and other items regarding the McKelvy house, built by Henry C. Burbank, sold to James M. McKelvy by Burbank in 1874, razed in 1955 to make way for a highway. Included in the information about the house is a letter from Glanville Smith to Miss Mary McKelvy.

Also included are the election and campaign materials for his 1972 election and 1974 re-election.

These minutes contain information about students, expenses, campus buildings and spaces, and personnel.

Series 2: Other Administrative Records

This series contain by-laws and rules and regulations, factbooks, financial reports, reports to the governor, and correspondence of Warren Stewart. Though mostly dated in the 1960s and 1970s, some material does date to the 1860s and 1880s.

These records are simply copies held at MnSCU and retained at the University Archives for reference purposes.  Other records in University Archives, especially records of the President and Academic Affairs, contain records that document the interaction between St. Cloud State and MnSCU.

This collection contains records from the Department of Music at St. Cloud State University, totaling 12 boxes. The records date from 1923-2009, with the vast majority of the items pertaining to faculty meeting minutes as well as student and faculty musical performances. Miscellaneous department records comprise a significant portion of this collection and range in content from department handbooks and newsletters to various scrapbooks.

The collection is arranged into three series, which are as follows:

Series 1: Faculty Meetings and Memorandum, 1960-1998

This series consists of department meeting minutes along with the notes and documents pertaining to each meeting. The subject matter of the materials is primarily related to: curriculum and program developments/requirements for undergraduate and graduate students, enrollment and budgetary figures/estimates, the organization of workshops and camps, sabbatical leaves and faculty changes, and special committee and council proposals, activities, evaluations, and requests. Materials are organized chronologically by date of meeting.

Series 2: Recitals and Performances, 1924-2009

This series contains promotional materials and programs for performances held at SCSU or by SCSU faculty and students. The series is arranged chronologically according to type of performance. All guest and visitor performances hosted by the music department are organized by date and arranged separately from all SCSU faculty, music group, and student performances. The programs most frequently pertain to: student and faculty recitals, Christmas concerts, fine arts and jazz festivals, ensemble performances and competitions, concert series and tours, division conferences, guest concerts and recitals, and joint SCSU/guest performances. Beginning in 1995, email notifications were used to promote performances and are therefore included in this series.

Series 3: Miscellaneous, 1936-2009

This series is organized first by subject matter and subsequently by date. The majority of the records pertain to departmental planning, program and curriculum development, and the promotion of educational opportunities such as scholarships, graduate assistantships, workshops, and camps. The series includes various forms of publications, including: student handbooks, brochures, calendars, scrapbooks, songbooks, newsletters, and syllabi. There are a total of three scrapbooks as well as additional materials highlighting the activities of particular music groups. Records date from 1936-2009 but major extent are from 1970s and 1980s.

This collection contains 52 oral histories, nearly all done between the mid 1970s and 1990, featuring St. Cloud State alums, long-time faculty, and top administrators, such as Presidents Budd, Wick, Graham, and McDonald. Done mostly by retired History faculty member Cal Gower, topics discussed in the oral histories include individual experiences and changes at St. Cloud State from the early 20th century, until the 1980s, as well as family background and life before and after time at St. Cloud State. Five additional interviews were done by Tom Steman in 2016, 2017, and 2019.

Some oral histories contain release forms from the interviewee and are noted.

Cal Gower conducted the interviews unless where noted.

This series contains the final oral history transcripts for each interview, signed release forms, if they existed, as well as other material given by the interviewee (photos, newspaper clippings, ephemera).

James C. Pehler Papers

This collection contains various materials relating to James Pehler and the time in spent in public office. These materials include awards given to Pehler, correspondence between the public and other politicians, campaign materials, proposals for a domed stadium, an assortment of various educational programs supported and participated by Pehler, environmental issues he was involved in, drafts of letters to be sent out in response to public questions, a work resume, legislative pamphlets, memos, newspaper clippings, press release, the Senate Journal, and various miscellaneous materials.

The first box in this collection contains various awards, certifications, and plaques Pehler received from various organizations he supported. The awards are in various physical conditions and some are undated.

The major part of this collection is the constituent correspondence between Pehler and the public. These correspondence date between the years 1972 through 1990, and are arranged in chronological order by date. The content matter of the correspondence mostly deal with legislative matters on a wide range of topics. They provide insight to public sentiment towards prospective laws and way of life in Minnesota.

Hjalmar Petersen and Family Papers

This collection consist of personal correspondence, newspaper articles, campaign materials, one microfilm, and miscellaneous items, all arranged chronologically. The majority of the personal correspondence are letters between Petersen and his wife Medora. Within these letters, the couple discuss various political events and Petersen’s thoughts on political issues. There is also two folders containing correspondence between Petersen and his brother-in-law, Georg Strandvold, discussing political issues.

The collection also contains various political materials, including: correspondences, campaign materials, business cards, speeches, biographical sketches, and other miscellaneous materials. There are a number of newspaper clippings concerning Petersen’s involvement in political issues as well as social events. There are also five, intact copies of the Askov American which Petersen owned and published.

These records contain photographic materials created by the student SCSU Photo Club. These records include materials such as photos, negatives, slides, and a certificate that pertain to the Photo Club and its members, as well as other general student events and campus life.

Included are photographs that document Photo Club events such as the Old Fashion Photo Shoot, North Shore Trip, Santa Shoot, and others. These materials were together in bound album.

Series 2: Negative Album

Contains the negatives that document Photo Club events such as the Old Fashion Photo Shoot, Sherburne Spring Fling, Santa Shoot, and others. These materials were together in bound album.

Series 3: Images and Other Materials

This series includes photos, negatives, slides and certificate created by or given to the Photo Club students. These materials document the Photo Club members' trips and events, such as Group Pictures, Halloween Party, and canoeing. The slides document other general student activities and campus life, as well as St. Cloud State buildings.

These boxes contain records about St. Cloud State University presidential inaugurations, dating from 1966 to 2008. The presidential inaugurations included here are for the following people who held office: Robert Wick, Charles Graham, Brendan McDonald, Roy Saigo, and Earl Potter, III. Additions to these series may be ongoing.

Arranged chronologically, the main focus of the records is the preparation for the inaugurations and the ceremonies themselves. Included in the records are detailed schedules of events, press releases, invitations and guest lists.

Other material is contained here, including correspondence, reports, and audio/video of presidential inaugurations.

The Presidential Inauguration records are split into five separate series.

Series 1: Robert Wick, 1965-1971

This series contains materials created for the inauguration of St. Cloud State’s 14th President, Dr. Robert Wick, who held office from 1965 to 1971. The inauguration was held during the weekend of October 28th and 29th of 1966. The Minneapolis Symphony Orchestra performed at this event.

The series contains a vast array of materials, which include schedules, the Inaugural Address on an audio track (reel-to-reel) in mono at 3 ¾ ips, 2 reels of film, copies of speeches, invitations and programs. The collection also includes two large scrapbooks and many 8 x 10” labeled photographs, in both matte and glossy format.

Series 2: Charles Graham, 1971-1981

This series contains materials created for the inauguration of St. Cloud State’s 15th President, Dr. Charles Graham, who held office from 1971 to 1981. The inauguration was held during the weekend of March 3rd and 4th of 1972. The musical performance at this ceremony was by Doc Severinsen of “The Tonight Show” fame.

The series contains materials created by the following committees: Ceremony Committee, Concerts Committee, Publicity and Printing Committee, and the Reception Committee. The series also includes 1 reel-to-reel audio track at 3 ¾ ips along with an audiocassette, press releases, a personal information sheet on Dr. Graham, newspaper clippings, memorandum, rosters, correspondence, guest lists, and invitations. Other materials include numerous letters of congratulations and certificates from local academic institutions.

Series 3: Brendan McDonald, 1982-1992

This series contains materials created for the inauguration of St. Cloud State’s 17th President, Dr. Brendan McDonald, who held office from 1982-1992. The inauguration was held on February 26, 1983.

The series contains materials created by the Steering Committee. It also includes one VHS and one cassette tape of the inauguration ceremony, correspondence, financial information, invitations, press releases, programs, and speeches.

Series 4: Roy Saigo, 2000-2007

This series contains materials created for the inauguration of St. Cloud State’s 21st President, Dr. Roy Saigo, who held office from 2000-2007. The inauguration was held on April 21, 2001.

Series 5: Earl Potter III, 2007-2016

This series contains materials created for the inauguration of St. Cloud State’s 22nd President, Dr. Earl H. Potter III. Contained in this series is an invitation to the inauguration ceremony and the program that was given to attendees. The inauguration was held on September 19, 2008.

Series 6: Robbyn Wacker

This series contains materials created for the inauguration of St. Cloud State’s 24st President, Dr. Robbyn Wacker, who held office from 2018-2024.

This series contains academic transcripts of St. Cloud State students who attended the university between the 1870s and 1940.

Information about each student that attended and/or graduated from St. Cloud State University include the classes they attended, the term the class was taken, and the grade received.  If the student graduated, a pledge was signed to teach in public schools in Minnesota. The transcript provides information where and when the student taught.

In addition, the transcripts are a wealth of biographical information about the student.  Information includes: when and to what class admitted, age when admitted, graduation date, residence, birthplace, high school attended, last school attended, and name, occupation, and nationality of parents.

Yoos, longtime faculty member in the Department of Philosophy at St. Cloud State, serving as a member on the Society’s board of directors in 1975. More importantly, Yoos served as editor of the newsletter and journal from 1972 to 1990. Yoos also served as the Society’s executive secretary from 1986 to 1995. Dr. Yoos is widely considered to be the Rhetoric Society’s cornerstone contributor in the development, success and longevity of the publication. After Yoos left, other St. Cloud State faculty members served as associate and assistant editors.

Don Samuelson Papers

The Don Samuelson Papers mainly contain correspondence, government reports and pamphlets, news releases, and the Representative’s documents from his time in office. Samuelson served in the Minnesota House of Representatves from 1969-1982 and in the Minnesota Senate from 1983-2002. The majority of the items date between 1968 and 1972. The collection consist of two series: Constituents Correspondence and Legislative Materials. In series 1, the correspondences between Samuelson and his constituents regarding an array of topics from abortion, gun control, and fluoridation legislation. In Series 2, the legislative materials from topics such as education, health, welfare, etc., concerning the Representative’s actions while elected.
