Records of Kappa Delta Pi
Collection · 1932 - 2024

This collection contains records of the Gamma Pi chapter of the honorary teacher fraternity Kappa Delta Pi.

The records here include membership lists and materials, event records, most importantly the initiation programs, and annual reports for the chapter. The records date mostly from the 1970s until the early 1990s, but some also date to the 1930s. The collection does contain the meeting minutes of the chapter, including those establishing the chapter at St. Cloud State.

Records of the Chronicle
24 · Collection · 1924-2020+

The Chronicle is a student published newspaper at St. Cloud State University. A wide variety of topics are covered including campus events, athletics, and people, as well as the St. Cloud community itself.

Times published per year varied over time, from twice a month to twice a week to once a month. The last printed issue dates was in April 2017, but printing of a physical issue began again in March 2019 and ended in March 2020. Issues were then born digital until April 2021. As of the spring of 2024, the Chronicle is entirely online.

Series four contains negatives, contact sheets, and photographs that appeared in each issue of the Chronicle from 1970 to 1990. Only a very small number of images appeared in each issue, yet there are images from a story that were not used or for images that did not make the final copy of the Chronicle.

St. Cloud State University

This collection contains 52 oral histories, nearly all done between the mid 1970s and 1990, featuring St. Cloud State alums, long-time faculty, and top administrators, such as Presidents Budd, Wick, Graham, and McDonald. Done mostly by retired History faculty member Cal Gower, topics discussed in the oral histories include individual experiences and changes at St. Cloud State from the early 20th century, until the 1980s, as well as family background and life before and after time at St. Cloud State. Five additional interviews were done by Tom Steman in 2016, 2017, and 2019.

Some oral histories contain release forms from the interviewee and are noted.

Cal Gower conducted the interviews unless where noted.

The collection is in two series.

Series 1: Transcripts and other material

This series contains the final oral history transcripts for each interview, signed release forms, if they existed, as well as other material given by the interviewee (photos, newspaper clippings, ephemera).

Series 2: Tapes

This series contains the audio tapes from each oral history, ranging from one cassette tape to two.

St. Cloud State University

Established in 1964, the records of the Center for Economic Education, span from 1963, a year before its creation, until 2018. The materials here include administrative records, alumni and faculty publications, and materials from the Winter Institute.

Series 1: Administration

This series has administrative records. These records include annual reports, funding reports, program reviews, general overviews of the program, and workshop information.

Series 2: Publications

This series contains publications written by the Center for Economic Education alumni and faculty such as economic reports and teaching tools for grades K-12.

Series 3: Winter Institute

This series contains a range of information about the Winter Institute that was held from 1963-2018. Materials include program brochures, flyers, and miscellaneous materials dating from 1969 to 2018.

Also included here are VHS tapes dating from 1987 to 1997. These tapes were recorded of the keynote speaker, panel sessions, or other events at the Winter Institute. No release forms were provided so the tapes can only be viewed in Archives.

The Winter Institute has offered high-quality educational programming with renowned speakers and thought provoking ideas. In addition, there were accessible economic education sessions for a general audience as well as targeted economic education sessions for K-12 educators.

This collection of records contains mostly publications, publicity, and biographical files of faculty and senior administrators at St. Cloud State. The publicatons and publicity provide a wide-ranging and rich view of the university, particularily from the 1960s through the 1980s.

Series 1. Administrative Files

This series contains adminstrative files of the unit, ranging from planning to events, publications, personnel and equipment, and budgets. The files primarily date from the late 1960s to the middle of the 1980s.

Series 2. Biographical Files

Dating from the 1950s to the 1980s, this series contains the publicity files created by University Communications for faculty and senior administrators. Types of documents included here are press releases, newspaper clippings, photographs, curriculum vitae, and other documents that contain biographical information.

Series 3. Clippings

Dating mostly from the 1980s, this series focuses on articles on and about St. Cloud State University. Topics covered are wide ranging, including buildings, personnel, and budget issues.

Series 4. Press Releases and Publicity

Arranged in chronological order, this series contains press releases dating from the 1950s through the early 1990s. The records focus on a wide variety of topics including campus events, buildings, personnel, curriculum, and other contributions to the community.

Series 5. Publications

This series contains several campus publications that focus on the campus community, as well as the community. Dating from the 1960s to 2011+, these publications document events and other happenings on campus, personnel, and buildings related to St. Cloud State.

University Communications

This collection contains campus telephone directories from 1924 through the 2014/15 academic year. Listed were the addresses, PO boxes, and phone numbers.  Often, the directory indicated the year of study for students.  Though the first few directories listed only students, most of the directories list faculty, staff, and students.  Faculty/staff were always listed separately from students.

Starting in the early 1960s, university offices were listed and, later, would list sub-units and personnel associated with the office.  Other information, such as campus maps and lists of buildings were included, as well as advertisements from local businesses and churches.

The final physical copy was printed for the 2014/15 academic year.

This collection contains records from the Department of Teacher Development at St. CLoud State University. The Department of Teacher Development is a combination of the former derpartments of Elementary Education, Secondary Education, and Student Teaching. The items covered include meeting minutes for Elementary Education, Secondary Education, and Student Teaching, Administrative files, reports, and publications from the department.

The collection is arranged into three series.

Series 1: Meeting Minutes, 1971-1985

This series contains departmental meeting minutes from Teacher Development, Student Teaching, Elementary Education, and Secondary Education. it is the bulk of material held in the collection.

Series 2: Reports, 1954-1991

Series 2 contains evaluation reports from Student Teaching, Teacher Development, Elementary Education, and Secondary Education.

Series 3: Administrative Files, 1952 - 2011

This series contains the rest of the files for the collection, including publications, student teaching handbooks, scholarships, IGNITE Teacher Preparation Initiative, Task Group II, British Education Workshop, American Association of Colleges for Teacher Education Distinguished Achievment Award, CMTEC files, and student teacher support documents.

Contained here are "yearbooks" created by students who participated in the UK study-abroad program held at Alnwick Castle, home of the Duke of Northumberland, in Alnwick, UK.

The self-made publications serve as a memory of the time that St. Cloud State spent together taking class, studying, living, and traveling together. The publications often contain images, quotes from students and faculty, and short biographies of the students.

These records document more than 20 years of history pertaining to the Minnesota Chair in Real Estate Program and George Karvel’s tenure at St. Cloud State University. They contain annual program and housing reports, newspaper clippings, awards issued to Karvel, letters from Karvel and associates like Steven Mooney to prospective donors to the program, papers written by them pertaining to economic and financial matters, and information about scholarships awarded to students in the program.

Most significant are the annual activities report, which date from 19XX to 19XX and the Minnesota Housing reports that date from XXXX to XXXX.

Minnesota Chair in Real Estate

This collection contains records of Institutional Effectiveness. Founded in the late 1930s, the main task of this office was to "organize and conduct research studies to provide information and data, serving as a basis for University decision making..." The bulk of the records here serve that purpose, gathering and presenting information about St. Cloud State students, faculty, curriculum, and facilities.

Series 1: Administrative Records

This series contains annual reports, history of Institutional Effectiveness, and faculty rosters.  The faculty rosters are significant as they list biographical information about St. Cloud State faculty, including salary.  There are additional faculty rosters in Series 2 on microfiche.

Series 2: Reports

This series has a wide variety of reports, nearly all related to St. Cloud State.  Many of the reports are related to students, including enrollment, ACT profiles of incoming freshmen, grade distribution, and faculty-student ratios.  Other reports are arranged by topic and are listed individually to facilitate access.

Other significant records include those that give a snapshot of St. Cloud State University. This includes the Higher Education General Information Survey (HEGIS), 1966-1980, to the federal government's Department of Education. HEGIS reported on student enrollment, campus facilities devoted to instruction, finances of the university, and degrees awarded. The summary of academic data, dating from 1982 to 2003, compiled information at the department, college and university level about students and student enrollment, including year, gender and major, faculty and staff, credits generated, and class size.

Microfiche is included in this series, likely reports run from the office's database. By academic term, these records report on student enrollment, faculty, instructional load, courses offered and their history, ethnic and racial background of students, students martial status, and transfers to St. Cloud State.

University Archives does have digital records taken from this office's website but are not included in this finding aid.

Max Partch Papers

This collection contains slides of nature-oriented images taken by Max Partch.  The images cover a wide variety of flora, fauna and landscape. Images include bird habitats and colonies, varieties of trees, damage and erosion both natural and man-made, nature formations such as cliffs, lakes, bluffs, ponds and marshes, and animals such as fox and beaver. Geographically, the images are primarily from Minnesota, in particular St. Cloud and Stearns County, but include locations in Wisconsin and Arizona.  Areas most depicted include the Cold Spring Heron Colony in Cold Spring, Minnesota, as well as other Minnesota heron colonies, nature sites including the prairie around Waubun, Minnesota, Englund Ecotone Preserve in Benton County, Minnesota, Partch Woods, St. Cloud, Minnesota, and other nature sites around Minnesota. Dates range from 1949 to 2003, but are heavily concentrated between 1949 and 1990.

Most slides contain an identifying number.  The numbers are unique, but do not correspond to any known system.  Most slides also contain a date, location, and brief description, though a few slides lack any additional descriptive information.  In some cases, the creator grouped ‘like’ items together for presentations and appearances, and that arrangement has been retained.

The descriptions for each slide was transcribed and included in the finding aid.

This collection consists of 44 boxes containing materials authored by current and former St. Cloud State University faculty, staff, and alumni. Materials include, but are not limited to, papers (many of which have been presented at meetings or conferences); studies, reports, and surveys; journal, magazine, and newspaper articles; theses; speeches; poems; and reviews. The primary author's name and affiliation to or position at St. Cloud State University is provided, where known, as are the names and affiliations of co-authors and the citation information for the works. Materials in this collection date from as early as 1886 and include several pieces from administrators and faculty members from the early 20th century. Overall, the majority of the work in the collection was created by faculty members and found publication in journals.

The collection contains records of St. Cloud State's Phi Kappa Phi chapter. Dating from 1973 to 1999, the material documents the activities of the chapter. Notable records here include the petition/documentation to establish a chapter at St. Cloud State, all initiation programs from 1975 to 1999, and meeting minutes. The group did meet outside of the initiation, usually held in the spring, yet the main activity was to recruit new members and the collection of dues.
